Social Media / Digital Media Importance in 2017
Social Media is one of the fastest growing industries in the world.
In 2010 there were around 970 million people on social media sites, most of which were teenagers like myself. Now, in 2016, there are over 2.3 billion social media users and another 200 million projected to join in 2017. These days almost everyone that we know has a Facebook account, even my grandmother has one. With smartphones being the new house phone for many of us, we have access to our social media anywhere we go.
As a business owner, you could only dream of having exposure to so many people all over the world, no matter where they go. This means that business owners have a constant way to potentially convert views into sales by utlizing their social media presences and each platforms’ individual advertising capabilities.
The old method of marketing was television or radio commercials and there was never a guarantee of return on these investments or that the advertising would even be seen by the right demographics. While social media does not provide a guarantee of a return either. It does guarantee that there will be a significant number of views and if used correctly, then it will reach the right demographics as well. The great thing about social media is that you can target your ads to the exact niche (demographic) your customers are in. This helps you stick out in a diluted market and grow your brand in the eyes of your target market.
However, time is of the essence!
There is No Time to Wait
As of 2012, 42% of business owners stated social media is critical for their business marketing. Large businesses (500+ employees) spent 21% on social media for lead generation while small businesses (1-5 employees) spent 43% on social media lead generation. (Source: State of Inbound Marketing 2012) As a business consultant and owner of A.E., a full-service marketing and business development firm I have built many plans/strategies for clients and have seen, first hand, the successes a small business can have with a strong social media campaign.
The current cost per 1000 impressions (amount that your post will be displayed) is $7.19 and it’s expected to at least double by 2020. In 2020 it’s projected that 75.9% of all digital ads will be mobile. To put this simply: Facebook Marketing costs will be rising steadily over the next 4 years. The other social media platforms are projected to follow a similar trajectory in terms of cost.
Don’t wait for the bigger companies to come in and start putting all of their marketing money into social media campaigns and out of the old dying marketing techniques. Once this happens the costs of Facebook and other social media advertising in general could triple! Make this New Years Resolution to get your business active on Social Media!
